What is Diabetes

Diabetes is a long-term health condition that affects how the body processes food into energy. Normally, when you eat, your body breaks food down into glucose (sugar) which enters the bloodstream. In response, the pancreas releases insulin—a hormone that helps move glucose into your cells to be used for energy.

With diabetes, the body either does not make enough insulin or cannot use it effectively. This leads to high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), which over time can cause serious health complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and overall well-being.

The Different Types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes
This happens when the body’s immune system attacks the pancreas and stops it from making insulin. Because of this, people with type 1 diabetes need insulin every day to stay alive. It often begins in childhood or adolescence but can develop at any age.

Type 2 Diabetes
The most common type of diabetes. Here, the body does not use insulin properly (called insulin resistance), and over time the pancreas cannot make enough insulin. It’s more common in adults, but many children and teens are now developing it. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, oral medications, and sometimes insulin is used to manage it.

Gestational Diabetes
This type develops during pregnancy when hormones make it harder for the body to use insulin. It usually goes away after the baby is born, but it increases the risk of both mother and child developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Other Types of Diabetes

  • Monogenic diabetes – caused by a change in a single gene.
  • Cystic fibrosis–related diabetes – linked to cystic fibrosis.
  • Secondary diabetes – caused by other medical conditions or certain medicines.

Causes of Diabetes

The causes of diabetes vary by type:

  • Type 1 Diabetes – Caused by an autoimmune reaction where the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Genetics and possible environmental triggers (like viruses) may also play a role.
  • Type 2 Diabetes – Often linked to insulin resistance, excess body weight, physical inactivity, and genetic factors. Over time, the pancreas may also fail to produce enough insulin.
  • Gestational Diabetes – Caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy that make the body less responsive to insulin.

Other Forms of Diabetes

  • Monogenic diabetes – Caused by a change in a single gene that affects insulin production or use.
  • Cystic fibrosis–related diabetes – Develops when cystic fibrosis damages the pancreas, reducing insulin production.
  • Secondary diabetes – Results from another medical condition (such as pancreatic disease or hormonal disorders) or as a side effect of certain medications (like steroids).

Common Signs & Symptoms

Diabetes signs and symptoms can vary depending on how high blood sugar levels are. Many people with prediabetes, gestational diabetes, or type 2 diabetes may not notice signs at first. In contrast, type 1 diabetes often develops suddenly, with symptoms appearing more quickly and being more severe.

Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Slow-healing wounds or frequent infections
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in hands and feet (neuropathy)

Risk Factors

Anyone can develop diabetes, but certain factors increase the likelihood:

  • Family history of diabetes
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Sedentary lifestyle (lack of physical activity)
  • Unhealthy diet high in processed foods and added sugars
  • High blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol levels
  • Age (risk increases after 45, though younger people are increasingly affected)
  • History of gestational diabetes during pregnancy
  • Certain ethnic backgrounds (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Asian American, Pacific Islander)
Understanding your risk is the first step toward prevention, early detection, and better management.

Diagnosis

Diabetes is diagnosed through blood tests that measure blood glucose levels, including:

  • Fasting Blood Sugar Test
  • A1C Test (average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months)
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)
  • Random Blood Sugar Test

These tests help determine whether someone has prediabetes, type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes.

Prevention and Management

While type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes risks can often be reduced. For all forms of diabetes, proper management is key to staying healthy.

Key strategies include:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats
  • Staying physically active (at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week)
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Monitoring blood sugar levels regularly
  • Taking medications or insulin therapy as prescribed
  • Attending regular health check-ups to prevent or catch complications early

How Diabetes Affects the Body

If not managed properly, high blood sugar can damage various organs and systems over time.

  • Heart disease and stroke – Increased risk of cardiovascular complications.
  • Kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy) – Can lead to kidney failure.
  • Eye problems (diabetic retinopathy) – May cause vision loss and blindness.
  • Nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) – Causes numbness, tingling, or pain, often in the hands and feet.
  • Foot problems – Poor circulation and nerve damage can result in infections, ulcers, and in severe cases, amputations.
